What to look for in a travel policy
1. Medical & evacuation limit
For long-haul trips, aim for at least HK$1M in overseas medical cover, with a separate emergency evacuation benefit. Hospital costs in the US, Japan and Europe can exceed HK$500k quickly.
2. Trip cancellation triggers
Check exactly which reasons let you cancel — illness, family bereavement, natural disaster, adverse travel advisory. 'Cancel for any reason' is rare in Hong Kong and usually costs more.
3. Baggage & delay sub-limits
Headline baggage limits often hide per-item caps (e.g. HK$3,000 per laptop). If you travel with expensive gear, verify the per-item and per-category limits, not just the total.
4. COVID-19 & pandemic clauses
Some plans include COVID-19 medical and quarantine allowance; others exclude 'known epidemic' entirely. Read the pandemic clause before assuming you are covered.
5. Activities & adventure sports
Skiing, scuba diving below 30m, motorcycling and hiking above certain altitudes are often excluded or require an upgrade. Confirm your itinerary is on the covered list.
6. Single-trip vs annual multi-trip
If you take three or more trips a year, an annual multi-trip plan is usually cheaper per trip. Check the per-trip day cap (often 60–90 days).
